Emergency Dentist in Wonthaggi

Living on the Bass Coast means the nearest emergency dental care isn’t always close to home — and when you’re in pain, the last thing you want is a long drive to Melbourne. Miners’ Dental Clinic provides emergency dental care from Wonthaggi for patients across the Bass Coast and South Gippsland, so you can be seen locally without the trip up the highway.

To book an emergency appointment, use the Book Now button on this page to find the next available time. If nothing suitable comes up, please leave us a message — we’ll call you back within business hours and do our best to fit you in for relief.

When to Come Straight In

Some dental problems are clearly urgent; others sit in a grey zone. As a general rule, we’d rather see you on the day if any of these apply:

If you’ve lost a filling or crown but you’re not in pain, give us a call and we’ll usually find you a spot in the next day or two — it’s worth getting it back on before food packs into the gap.

Knocked-Out Tooth — First Hour Matters

If you’ve had a tooth knocked out, the next 30 to 60 minutes will likely decide whether it can be saved. Here’s what to do:

For an adult tooth

For a child’s baby tooth

Don’t put a baby tooth back. Pushing it back in can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Bring the child in for a check, and bring the tooth with you so we can look at the root.

Travelling Up From the Coast?

We see plenty of patients on holiday — and dental emergencies on a beach holiday are particularly frustrating. If you’re staying in Inverloch, Cape Paterson, San Remo, Cowes, or on Phillip Island and a tooth has flared up, we can usually fit you in faster than driving back to your regular dentist.

We’ll happily send a treatment summary to your usual dentist so they can pick up your ongoing care when you get home. Bringing a photo of any recent dental work, or the name of your regular practice, helps us hand things over cleanly.

What Happens at Your Appointment

Most emergency appointments follow a similar shape. We’ve kept the language plain because it’s hard to take in clinical detail when you’re in pain.

First, we work out what’s going on

We’ll talk through what you’ve been feeling and when it started, have a look at the area, and take an X-ray or scan if we need to see what’s happening below the surface. Some problems are obvious on examination; others need imaging to confirm.

Then we help you feel better

Depending on what we find, settling the pain might mean a local anaesthetic injection, draining an abscess, removing a fractured filling, dressing an exposed nerve, or temporarily stabilising a damaged tooth. We don’t always finish definitive treatment on the day — sometimes the priority is just getting you comfortable so we can plan properly.

Then we talk through next steps

Once you’re more comfortable, we’ll go through what we found, what we recommend, and the fees involved before doing anything further. You’re welcome to take that home and think about it.

What an Emergency Appointment Costs

Most emergency appointments include a clinical examination, X-rays where needed, and immediate care to settle the problem. Fees vary depending on what’s involved, but we’ll always quote you for any further treatment before going ahead.

If you have dental extras through your private health fund, we can process the claim on the day. If you’re not sure what your cover includes, our reception team can usually give you a rough idea before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can I be seen?
It depends on the day, but we keep emergency slots in our schedule and aim to see urgent cases the same day where possible. If our online booking shows nothing suitable, please leave us a message — we’ll call back and work through what we can do.
Don’t put it back in. Baby teeth aren’t meant to be reimplanted because doing so can damage the adult tooth developing in the bone underneath. Bring your child in for a check, and bring the tooth with you so we can confirm the root came out cleanly.
Pain that’s keeping you awake, throbbing without obvious trigger, worsening with hot food or drink, or coming with swelling tends to need same-day care — those are usually signs the nerve or surrounding tissue is involved. Mild sensitivity to cold without other symptoms can usually wait for a routine appointment.
Not strictly an emergency, but worth getting back on within a few days before food packs into the gap or the underlying tooth becomes sensitive. Keep the area clean, avoid chewing on that side, and give us a call to find a spot.
Absolutely. We see holiday patients regularly. If you’d like, we’ll send a summary of what we did to your usual dentist so they can pick up your care when you get home — just bring their details with you.
Often yes. The first visit is usually about getting you out of pain and working out what’s going on. Definitive treatment — a root canal, a crown, an extraction site that needs grafting — is typically staged over follow-up visits so we can do it properly rather than rushing.
Yes — we see children for dental trauma, toothache, swelling, and other urgent concerns.
Yes — you don’t need to be an existing patient with us to be seen in an emergency. If you’re a regular patient elsewhere, that’s no problem; we’ll send a note across so your usual dentist is in the loop.
