Understanding Clear Aligner Treatment in Wonthaggi for Teeth Alignment
Sleep Dentistry in Wonthaggi
Some dental treatment is difficult because of the procedure itself. Other times, it’s the length of the appointment, the amount of treatment involved, or previous dental experiences that make it hard to move forward. When those factors make treatment difficult, receiving care under a general anaesthetic may be an option worth discussing.
At Miners’ Dental Clinic, eligible patients can receive dental treatment under a general anaesthetic at our Wonthaggi practice. While you’re fully asleep throughout the procedure, a registered specialist medical anaesthetist manages your anaesthetic and monitors you from beginning to recovery, allowing your dentist to focus on your treatment.
We see patients from across Wonthaggi.
We welcome patients from Wonthaggi, Inverloch, Cape Paterson, Kilcunda, Korumburra and communities across the Bass Coast.
Treatment Under General Anaesthetic at Our Wonthaggi Practice
A registered specialist medical anaesthetist administers your general anaesthetic and remains with you throughout your procedure. They assess your medical history beforehand, monitor your breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels during treatment, and supervise your recovery afterwards.
Because treatment takes place at our Wonthaggi practice, your consultation, dental treatment, and follow-up appointments remain with the same team in one familiar location.
Procedures That May Be Completed Under General Anaesthetic
General anaesthesia may be considered for a range of dental procedures, including:
- Wisdom teeth removal and surgical extractions
- Multiple tooth extractions completed during one appointment
- Dental implants, including full-arch implant treatment
- Root canal treatment
- Dental Crowns, bridges and extensive restorative dentistry
- Multiple procedures completed during the same visit
For some patients, treatment that would otherwise require several appointments may be completed during a single session. Whether this approach is appropriate depends on the treatment involved, your medical history, and the outcome of your pre-anaesthetic assessment.
Who May Be Suitable for Sleep Dentistry?
General anaesthesia isn't suitable for everyone. Before recommending this approach, we'll consider your medical history, current medications, weight, airway, and any existing medical conditions, including heart, lung or sleep apnoea conditions.
You'll attend a dental consultation before undergoing a separate pre-anaesthetic assessment with the anaesthetist. If a general anaesthetic isn't the most appropriate option, we'll discuss other ways of managing your dental treatment.
Understanding the Risks
A general anaesthetic is a medical procedure and carries risks. Many patients experience temporary effects such as drowsiness, nausea, a sore throat, or tiredness for a day or two after treatment. Although serious complications are uncommon, they can occur, and the level of risk differs from one patient to another.
During your pre-anaesthetic assessment, the anaesthetist will explain the risks relevant to your medical history, answer your questions, and obtain your consent before treatment proceeds.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Before your procedure, we'll provide written instructions to help you prepare safely.
Please remember to:
- Follow your fasting instructions exactly. Treatment cannot proceed if fasting requirements haven't been met.
- Tell us about every medication you take, including supplements, herbal products, and over-the-counter medicines.
- Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you overnight.
- Plan to take the day of your procedure off, and in most cases, the following day as well.
- Avoid driving, operating machinery, signing legal documents, or drinking alcohol for 24 hours after your procedure.
Fees and Payment Information
The total cost of treatment includes two separate components: your dental treatment and the anaesthetist's fee, which varies according to the length of your procedure.
Before booking your treatment, you'll receive a written treatment plan with item numbers together with a separate estimate for the anaesthetic. This allows you to review both costs and check your available benefits with your health fund.
Part of the anaesthetist's fee may be claimable through Medicare. The amount depends on your individual Medicare Safety Net threshold, so we cannot estimate your rebate in advance. Dental treatment fees are separate and are not covered by Medicare.
Flexible payment options are available. Our reception team will be happy to discuss these with you.
When a General Anaesthetic Isn't the Right Option
General anaesthesia isn't necessary for every patient. Depending on your treatment and individual circumstances, a longer appointment or treatment completed over several visits may provide a suitable alternative.
Following your examination and pre-anaesthetic assessment, we'll explain whether treatment under a general anaesthetic is appropriate and discuss the available options with you.

FAQs
Will I be asleep during the procedure?
Yes. A general anaesthetic means you’ll be fully unconscious throughout your dental treatment and won’t remember the procedure afterwards.
Who administers the general anaesthetic?
A registered specialist medical anaesthetist administers your anaesthetic, monitors you throughout the procedure, and supervises your recovery before you’re discharged.
Can several dental procedures be completed during one appointment?
In many cases, yes. Where appropriate, treatment that would usually require several visits may be completed during the same appointment. This depends on the procedures involved and your suitability for a general anaesthetic.
Will I need someone to take me home?
Yes. A responsible adult must drive you home after treatment and stay with you overnight. We can’t proceed unless these arrangements have been made.
Can children receive treatment under a general anaesthetic?
Yes. Children from four years of age may be suitable for treatment under a general anaesthetic. Suitability depends on your child’s general health, the treatment required, and assessment by both the dentist and the anaesthetist.
How soon can treatment be arranged?
Treatment can be scheduled once you’ve completed both your dental consultation and pre-anaesthetic assessment. We’ll discuss current appointment availability during your consultation.
What if a general anaesthetic isn't suitable for me?
if we determine that a general anaesthetic isn’t appropriate, we’ll explain why and discuss alternative approaches to completing your dental treatment.
What should I do if I'm anxious about coming to my consultation?
Please let our reception team know when you call. Dental anxiety is a common reason patients enquire about sleep dentistry, and we’ll do what we can to make your first visit as comfortable as possible.
